ASES Names 2013 Award Recipients and Fellow

The American Solar Energy Society (ASES) presented its 2013 awards at SOLAR 2013 in Baltimore, Md. ASES honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to ASES or the industry each year at the ASES National Solar Conference.

The Charles Greeley Abbot Award was presented to Henry Red Cloud, proprietor of Lakota Solar Enterprises on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Red Cloud’s supplemental solar air-heating system saves tribal families 20 to 30 percent in heating costs.

 
Brownell

Bruce Brownell, founder and president of Adirondack Alternative Energy, received the Passive Pioneer Award for his early recognition and application of passive solar design concepts.

 

 

witmerThe John and Barbara Yellott Award went to Lucas Witmer, a doctoral candidate in energy and mineral engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. Witmer was recognized for his work in valuation of solar irradiation for HVAC systems.

 

 

kleinSanford (Sandy) Klein is this year’s recipient of the Hoyt Clarke Hottel Award. The director of the University of Wisconsin Solar Energy Laboratory was recognized for his contributions to educational software for solar system design and modeling.

 

 

azerbegiASES honored Renee Azerbegi with the Women in Solar Energy Award. As founder and president of Ambient Energy, Azerbegi has been instrumental in the inclusion of active solar energy in dozens of high-performance buildings.

 

 

middleton

The Rebecca Vories Award was presented to Paulette Middleton for volunteering her support at many ASES conferences, her leadership as the chair of the Sustainability and Membership committees, her service on the ASES Board of Directors and in many other roles. Middleton is president of Panorama Pathways.

 

 

comisDavid L. Comis was named the 2013 ASES Fellow. Comis, who works at SENTECH supporting the DOE’s sustainability, renewable energy and technology deployment activities, serves on the ASES Board and recently chaired the Technical Divisions Committee.

 

 

Keyes Completes Board Term

keyesJason Keyes, a partner at Keyes, Fox & Wiedman LLP and an expert in distributed generation and renewable energy law, finished his term on the ASES Board of Directors in January. He joined the ASES Board in January 2008 and most recently served as the board secretary. ASES thanks Keyes for his years of service.
