Coal Plants Disappearing Fast, Replaced by Natural Gas
Platts reports that the Black & Veatch engineering firm predicts that 61.7 MW of coal plants will close by 2020. Most of that capacity will be replaced by natural gas, which will grow by 390 gigawatts (GW) by 2037, to provide more than 50 percent of America’s electricity. Coal will drop to less than 20 percent of output (from about 38 percent today), and nuclear to 14 percent (from 20 percent today). Renewable energy capacity will grow by 65 percent over that period.
